3 Frugal Ideas for a Happy Halloween

October 25, 2010, by Financially Poor

Halloween is just around the corner! A time for tons of candy and costume-fun – which makes me pretty excited. The one thing that can be stressful around this time? Going over budget.  But I’m here to tell you that doesn’t have to be an issue.  Below are 3 frugal ideas for a non-budget busting Halloween.

Make Your Decorations

Frugal Ideas for HalloweenMaking your own decorations can be daunting at first, but with so many resources available on the internet, you can easily learn how to do it. I’ll tell you one thing – the craft store is a great place for inspiration!  Just stroll around the store, look at all the options around you and then go home and brainstorm different ideas like:

  • Painting pictures on poster board
  • Making Halloween-themed jewelry
  • Ripping up some cloth to use as drapes for a scary look

There are tons of great ideas — all you have to do is get to thinking creatively!

Make Your Own Food

This is the part of Halloween you can have the most fun with, in my opinion. Buying something from the local grocery store isn’t necessarily a budget-buster; on the contrary, making your own food will provide a lot more value and fun.

Once again there are a lot of sources for great Halloween food ideas, so I’ll just give you a couple of tips:

  • Let your imagination run wild. Food is really easy to be creative with, especially with a little food coloring.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix foods that don’t normally go together. This is Halloween so have a little fun.
  • Sketch your food idea first. It doesn’t have to be a perfect sketch, just something to give you an idea.

The most important thing is to just have fun with it and show off your pieces of art to friends and family.

Make Your Costume

Costumes can get to be a really expensive cost. Luckily there are many great ways to make your own costume and a lot of great sites and videos to teach you how.

One of my favorite sources for costumes is the local thrift store. You can get real clothes that will make your costume really believable — not the thin material costumes tend to be made from. I went there one year, bought a pair of jeans for $3 which I ended up ripping up and added some fake blood.  Then BAM, I’m a zombie.  This year I’m going to be a gangster, so I’ll be getting a suit from the same place.

As you can see the craft store is a great place if you want to try and make your own costume. This can be a real fun activity, especially if you get creative. I tried to make a costume a couple of years ago and I was surprised how well it turned out. A little fake blood makes everything look better.

If you must buy a pre-made costume, and you’re not picky, I’d wait until right before Halloween to go to a Halloween store because by that time they always have great deals. Unfortunately the selection is really thin….but definitely cheap.

Bonus: Enter Halloween Contests!
Once you have your costume, be sure to enter Halloween contests like the FreeScore Halloween Mask Contest which runs until November 3rd.  You’ll have a chance at winning $583 just for uploading a picture of your mask and getting friends to vote for you.  Scariest mask wins the grand prize, but second and third place entries get $200 and $100 each. Winning that will help your budget for sure!

Do you have any frugal Halloween ideas?

FreeScore Halloween Mask ContestRummaging through last year’s pile of Halloween costumes, trying to get some inspiration for this year? Well before you toss those out-dated, ghastly costumes, be sure to put them to good use!  Enter FreeScore.com’s Halloween Mask Contest for a chance to win $583 – a number that plays on the character, Billy BadScore’s, bad credit score.  Even if you doubt your mask is worthy of winning the grand prize, you still have a chance at second or third — prizes totaling $200 and $100 Visa gift cards, respectively.  Not bad for a costume you’ll be bidding farewell to anyhow.

The contest is very easy to enter as well.  Simply “Like” us on Facebook, upload your scariest mask photo and provide some basic contact details.  It’s so easy, it’s quite scary.  Just be sure to enter before the November 3rd deadline!  If you want to increase your chances of winning, share the contest with your friends and family and get them to vote for you from November 4th through 10th.  Hey, it could even spark their creative juices and get them submitting a scary photo of their own! It’s a win-win situation.

Here are a few tips to make sure your photo meets our requirements:

  • Be scary! Show us your scariest, spookiest Halloween mask.
  • Be creative! Making your own bloodcurdling mask, or adding a dose of horror to an existing one, will earn you extra points for creativity and originality.
  • Cover up! Mask should cover over 50% of the face and reflect the Billy BadScore ‘scare’ theme.
  • Keep it tight! Crop your photo so the judge’s attention is on the mask, not an entire costume or group of costumes.
  • Format it! Photos should be saved as .jpg or .gif format.

Before you run off to trick-or-treat or party all night, do us a favor and SCARE us with your mask!  Happy Halloween.

Can you look “Badder” Than Me This Halloween?  Here is your chance to try.

Halloween Mask Contest

This Halloween, look as embarrassing as me.   Enter my “Baddest” Halloween Mask contest by going to FreeScore’s Halloween Mask Contest!   Just enter your version of the “baddest”, most goofy, embarrassing mask, and win a $583 treat!

That’s a really bad score, but really good money.

There are no tricks! Just “Like” FreeScore’s Facebook page, upload a photo of your baddest, most goofy, embarrassing mask onto the page, and then tell your friends to vote for your entry. The entry with the most votes wins!

To all participants: Bad luck (I am incapable of passing up saying the word “bad”), and don’t forget, one bad score can ruin everything!

Sloppily,

Billy BadScore

P.S.  People often ask: How can one score create so much trouble? Well, if you’re not monitoring all three of your credit scores on a site like FreeScore.com, a single bad score, like me, might crash your credit report. Then, whenever you try to get a car or home loan, a potential lender might decide the mess isn’t worth it.

In a recent acquisition, FreeScore.com has combined our love for the Mets with our desire to educate others about the importance of knowing all 3 credit scores.  FreeScore.com will be advertising our new “Three Credit Score Guys” campaign at Citi field with the New York Mets as well as on SportsNet N.Y. and digital advertising on Mets and SNY online properties.
