FreeScore TV Bloopers: Funny. Bad Credit: Not So Much.

February 17, 2012, by Billy Bad Score

As the king of credit bloopers, I’m the guy who screws things up when you apply for a loan, job and insurance. Tripping up people when they try to use their credit is something that brings a big smile to my face—right behind my trademark hockey mask.

Maybe that’s why people like it so much when I wind up getting the boot on FreeScore’s TV commercials. If you like laughing at my expense, you’ll LOVE these funny outtakes from the latest commercials starring your truly. (Despite their move-star good looks, I consider the Good Score Guys lowly extras.)

It seems the Good Score Guys don’t take credit bloopers lightly.  You can imagine my joy at watching them try to maintain their composure in these hilarious clips.

Those do-gooders are dead serious when it comes to preventing me from causing mischief in people’s lives. And I hate to admit it, but FreeScore does help people avoid credit bloopers. Not only does FreeScore give you full access to your 3 credit scores, so you can make sure I’m not one of them; it also protects your credit with 24/7 credit monitoring and automatic credit alerts.

Remember: Keep me around your scores and your credit is sure to be the butt of jokes. Bloopers from our commercials may be funny, but bad credit is no laughing matter.

FreeScore Thanks GE and Dress for Success

January 30, 2012, by Carrie Coghill

Dress for Success FairfieldA week ago, I had the privilege of presenting to the women of Dress for Success Mid-Fairfield County at the offices of GE in Norwalk Connecticut.  We appreciate GE being gracious and opening up their offices.

I say it was a privilege because these brave women all have a story (don’t we all) – about raising children on their own, making homes and marriages work, finding work and losing jobs – and the thrill of getting a new job again.

Most have a high school education – several some college – or college degrees.

And, through it all, I am there to help them understand credit scores and credit reports, and budgeting and more — Through our seminar on Credit 101.

They learn about three credit scores and more – and really how good scores can open doors.

I received lots of great insightful questions –

Like – “if I don’t keep a balance on my credit cards, does it mean that I do not get credit for making payments on my credits report?”  Of course the answer is no.  You get credit as longs as you pay your bills on time.

Another woman is paying off a college loan that she feels was already handled – but she is diligently doing it.

I also heard lots of basic questions as well – as straightforward as “What is a credit score and how is it calculated?”

Which led me to this – we really need to educate Americans (especially those in high school) about credit scores and more.

Many schools are making this part of the curriculum.  I arrived to help these women.  I hope for them, we arrived in time to help them – because it is never too late to improve your credit standing and credit scores.

Like anything in life, you just need to know what to do.

Which leads me to Debbie Venditti, my host, who runs Dress For Success in Fairfield County.

She is an amazing woman helping women.  When I wrote earlier about the thrill of getting a new job – it is Debbie and her team that gives these women the courage, confidence and belief that that can land back in the workforce.  Debbie and team make dreams into reality for many.

Starting February 6th, we will begin national airing of our two new TV commercials each entitled, “Starter Home.” The two commercials offer something for both men and women.

The new commercials were first announced in Direct Market News.

We have one spot featuring a woman looking at her dream home with a real estate agent.  When the agent sees that the woman’s third score has literally gone down the toilet – the real estate agent walks out on the deal.

In the male version, a young man is tuned into to buying the house of his dreams when the music goes sour with his third credit score of 583.

The 60-second spots point out you have three credit scores.  One bad score can blow the deal on your dream house.  The announcer on each spot notes: “At FreeScore.com, you can keep an eye on all three of your credit scores and know just where you stand at all times with 24/7 credit alerts, unlimited access to your complete credit profile and the easiest way to spot inaccuracies.”

To see the spots visit our YouTube page or check it out below!

FreeScore.com will also be producing 30-second commercials of the spot.

According to Jeff Paradise, senior vice president of FYI Direct, Inc., the parent company of the FreeScore.com brand, “As mortgage rates have hit an all time low, we felt this was timely.  The mortgage markets seem to be opening up.   For example, leading mortgage providers are eliminating the minimum credit score requirement for borrowers seeking a mortgage refinance from their existing servicer, as long as they have at least 20% equity in their home.  Yet, scores below the mid-600s may still have difficulty obtaining a loan.  So, in these spots, we are reminding people to take control of their credit before they start the purchase process.”

Free App!! — Also, check out our free credit app for house hunters and real estate agents with a smart phone or mobile device.   The free, full-featured app is designed for users “on the go”.  It includes the following:

  • Ability for members to immediately access their three credit scores and credit reports
  • Ability for anyone to compare their credit scores to others in their zip code
  • An interest rate calculator
  • Current mortgage rates
  • A search function to find homes in your area
  • Real estate news and information
  • Other news on financing and information on credit and credit scores

Every week, we usually provide a weekly roundup of the news about credit and credit scores.  This week however, we are going to look at the week ahead.

And in doing so, FreeScore.com is recognizing and giving credit where credit is due.

Next week marks Martin Luther King Day in the United States.  As the figurehead, and leader of the civil rights movement, we pay tribute to him during this week as January 15th would have been his 83rd birthday.

While Dr. King led the Civil Rights as its leader and figurehead, we also recognize a few key events and people that that helped Dr. King make Civil Rights a cornerstone in American history.

Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, (1954), was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court that declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students unconstitutional.

Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African-American civil rights activist, whom the U.S. Congress called “the first lady of civil rights”, and “the mother of the freedom movement”.

On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to obey bus driver James F. Blake’s order that she give up her seat to make room for a white passenger.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (enacted July 2, 1964) was a landmark piece of legislation in the United States that outlawed major forms of discrimination against African Americans and women, including racial segregation. It ended unequal application of voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools.

Here is to thanking Dr. King and all of those people and events that made freedom and civil rights in the United States a reality.

First, we are posting our weekly roundup a day early this week as many of you may be cramming in last-minute shopping before Christmas Day.

While last-minute shopping is on your mind, here are a couple of highlighted posts to help avoid credit score surprises when the shopping spree ends.

Martha C. White of Time Magazine wrote about the 5 Things That — Surprisingly — Don’t Hurt Your Credit Score. Martha points out that

1. How much money you make,
2. Whether or not you have a job,
3. Whether or not you revolve a balance,
4. Whether or not your home is underwater, and
5. How much money you have in the bank do not determine your scores.

Next, Credit Karma posted on LearnVest.com that there are 10 surprising things that hurt your credit scores. What are they?

1. Renting a Car with a Debit Card
2. Requesting a Credit Limit Increase
3. Applying for an Account at a Credit Union
4. Getting a New Cell Phone
5. Using a Business Credit Card
6. Not Using Your Credit Cards
7. Disputing a Credit Card Bill
8. Using a Finance Plan for a Major Purchase
9. Closing an Old Credit Card Account, and
10. Sitting on Unpaid Parking Tickets.

Consumer expert, Clark Howard, noted that “Credit scores remained remarkably constant during the recession.” So, the economy won’t affect your scores, but your actions will.

So, while you are shopping this weekend, don’t surprise yourself by signing up for store credit cards for a discount. As we have reported, through credit score simulations we found that opening a new credit card with a $2,500 limit can lower credit scores by as much as -52 points.

Use your credit wisely as your shop these next few weeks. And, before you venture out, you can go to FreeScore.com to our Credit Score Predictor℠ and see if your scores may be affected by the actions you take.

Happy shopping and Happy Holidays!

Check out our weekly roundup, focusing on some serious, funny and outrageous stuff in the credit space.

Serious Stuff:

Facebook Friends Can Be Credit Score Enemies:  Adrienne Jeffries of The New York Observer wrote that “a new wave of start-ups is working on algorithms gathering data for banks from the web of associations on the internet known as ‘the social graph,’ in which people are “nodes” connected to each other by ‘edges.’”

The bottom line is that lenders may look at who you know as an influence on you and your credit scores.  Seems we may all be facing up to Facebook.

Funniest Credit Score Tweet of the Week:

It’s funny my credit score, my blood alcohol content & high school GPA are all the same number (1.2)  comedian Ron White. Check him out here @Ron_White

Outrageous Charges:

Cassandra Hubbart of AOL Daily Finance finds 10 outrageous credit card charges – including this in her post: “But some receipts merit a double-take because of the sheer outrageousness of their totals, or the bizarre nature of the expense ($2 for a “farting charge?”).”  Now that really stinks! Follow @Daily_Finance!

Coming up on the holidays, make sure you check your receipts and credit scores too – avoid outrageous changes and mistakes on your credit reports.

I’m embarrassed (even more than usual). Sure, with my reputation as the one bad credit score that ruins everything, it’s no wonder I wear a mask. But the new FreeScore TV commercial gives me a bum rap. If you’ve seen it, you know that I was arrested for robbing someone of a low interest rate.  The guy fingered me in a lineup of common criminals (and those oh-so-innocent-looking Good Score guys). But as I said to my court-appointed attorney (people with bad credit scores can rarely afford a private one), why should I take the fall for someone else’s negligence?

Think about it: I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was my accuser’s responsibility to check his three credit scores before he applied for a loan – but he didn’t. I wouldn’t have been there to ruin his shot at the best interest rate if he had simply stayed on top of his credit. When you come right down to it, I didn’t just show up in his credit profile; he put me there!

Lots of people make me the fall guy for their credit problems. But don’t judge me, folks. Use better judgment with your credit. I don’t force you to run up your credit card bills, forget to check your credit report for fraud and errors, and leave your credit at risk without the protection of a credit monitoring service. Hel-lo! Anyone ever hear of assuming responsibility for your own actions (or inaction)? I didn’t “rob” that guy of his low interest rate. He cheated himself out of it by failing to make sure that all three of his credit scores were high enough to qualify for the rate he wanted.

If you don’t want me hanging around your credit profile, you need to check your credit scores and reports regularly. That’s why FreeScore updates them every month. FreeScore also monitors your credit 24/7 and alerts you to sudden changes in your credit files at the top three credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. You’ll know about problems ahead of time, so you don’t get caught by surprise when you apply for a loan, lower interest rate, insurance, or job. And if you think I’m bad, just think of the field day identity thieves can have with your credit if you don’t have it monitored. Those guys really do belong in jail!

I hope my case gets dismissed. If it goes to trial, the prosecution will probably pack the jury with people with bad credit scores – people like the guy in the commercial who are eager to blame me for their problems. But I’m just the poor schlepp that their own bad habits brought into their lives.

So don’t blame me when your credit turns out to be not up to par. Blame yourself for practically inviting me to ruin everything. Am I a criminal? No way. A misunderstood creation of your own negligence – guilty as charged!

Starting today, we began national airing of our TV commercial entitled, “Line-Up,” featuring a line-up of criminals at a police station, one of whom is responsible for “robbing” the victim on his interest rate. The 60-second spot points out you can “keep an eye on your three scores at FreeScore.com.” It also notes key FreeScore.com features such as accessing your three scores on a mobile device, plus the ability to find signs of identity theft.  Airing begins on national cable networks plus select spot-market TV stations. To see the spot go to FreeScore.com Line-Up or check it out below!

FreeScore.com will also be producing a 30-second commercial.

According to Jeff Paradise, senior vice president of FYI Direct, Inc., the parent company of the FreeScore.com brand, “While this spot is fun and memorable – we really want to help people remember that checking their three credit scores helps puts them in financial control.  It is increasingly more important for consumers to know more about their credit histories than do lenders and future bosses.  You can’t have that kind of control without regular access to your three reports and scores – and as many know, credit scores usually change five or more time per year.”

The spot was directed by Leigh Scott of Palace Productions in Norwalk, CT.
